Gulliver and Armes sign for Bedford Blues

Bedford Blues have signed two Premiership stars for the 2012/13 Championship season – and both will be familiar names to the Goldington Road faithful.

After one season with Worcester Warriors, Ben Gulliver, who previously played for the Cornish Pirates, Plymouth and Coventry as well as a loan spell with Leicester Tigers, is making the move from Sixways.

Gulliver, 30, who stands at six foot five inches tall and weighs in at almost 17 and a half stone will add some much needed fire power and experience to the Blues second row.

Adding a bit of weight in the back row department will be former Bedford Blues Academy player Tom Armes who returns to Goldington Road after a four year stint with Leister Tigers.

Armes, who can play anywhere across the back row, was signed to the Leicester Academy and played in the ‘A’ League with Tigers before making his debut as a replacement in the Premiership win over Northampton in October 2009 followed up a week later by coming off the bench in the historic win over the then world champions South Africa.

The 21-year-old spent time with Championship rivals Nottingham during the 2010/11 season to gain some valuable game time but returns to his roots with a permanent move to Goldington Road.

Blues Director of Rugby Mike Rayer said: “I am thrilled to be able to welcome Ben and Tom to Goldington Road and I think everyone will be excited to see them in action for the Blues next season.

“We all know just how important a player Ben was for the Pirates and how influential he was down in the West Country. I have no doubts that after a stint in the Premiership, he will be fired up and raring to get going for us next term.

“Tom is a fantastic talent who we all know really well and I’m sure he will slot in perfectly within our back row. Tom headed off to Leicester with our best wishes but we are now delighted to welcome him back and I’m certain it won’t take long to get back into the swing of things.”

Dragons bolster back three with the signing of Scarlets’ Evans and Ospreys’ Prydie

Newport Gwent Dragons are delighted to announce 2 new signings to bolster their squad ahead of the 2012/2013 season.

Full back Dan Evans, 23, joins the Dragons from the Scarlets whilst full back/wing Tom Prydie, 20, also makes the move East from the Ospreys. Their recruitment comes days after the Leinster game where the Dragons bid farewell to back 3 players Aled Brew and Martyn Thomas.

Both Dan and Tom have huge potential and are Wales caps but have had limited opportunities up until now.

Dan Evans rose through the ranks at the Scarlets and has been a mainstay in the squad over the past 3 seasons. He has racked up 14 appearances for the Scarlets this season including home and away against the Dragons. Dan won two caps on Wales’s 2009 North America tour, making his debut in the 32-23 win over Canada but has been overlooked since.

On his move to the Dragons, Dan said “I’m really looking forward to it. It’s exciting to be joining a squad with the amount of young talent that the Dragons has at the moment. I’m eager to press for some more game time and hopefully help push for a successful season here at the Dragons.”

Connacht announce new CEO

connacht crowdA new chapter in the development of Connacht Rugby begins today with the announcement that the IRFU and Connacht Rugby have appointed Mr. Tom Sears as the next Chief Executive of the western province.

Sears, 43, steps into the role from his current position as CEO of Cricket Kenya and replaces the highly respected Gerry Kelly, who is retiring having served as the Chief Executive of Connacht Rugby since 1999.

Sears has impressive experience across the professional sports environment, with Rugby at the heart of his early career. A former journalist during the 1990’s, he previously held roles in the communications and commercial areas for both the RFU and Northampton Saints, before moving to the sport of Cricket in 2000, where he was the commercial director for Worcestershire County Cricket Club.

During his time there he helped to significantly grow revenues and sponsorship across both the professional and community levels of the game in the county, before moving on to become the Chief Executive of Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 2005. He oversaw radical restructuring of the organisation and its finances, redevelopment of its grounds and returning it to profitability.

Tom Rees forced to retire

London Wasps flanker Tom Rees has sadly been forced to retire from the game with immediate effect following medical advice on a knee injury.

Tom Rees won 15 caps for EnglandRees, 27, suffered the injury during a pre-season game last summer and despite his best efforts in rehab since then, he has been medically advised to stop playing immediately.

The news is extremely sad for everyone associated with London Wasps, with the popular and influential former club captain having had cruel luck with injuries for a number of recent seasons.

Tom Rees said: “I’m gutted that I have been forced to retire at a time when I feel I could have contributed so much more to my club. Whilst I will always think what might have been, I will also look back on my career and what I achieved with a great deal of pride. Over the last nine years I have been privileged to take part in my hobby for a living, and I am extremely grateful for that opportunity. During that time I have met a lot of great people who have played a huge part in my career and to list them here would take far too long, so I would just like to say thank you to all the supporters, coaches, staff, opponents, teammates and everyone else who have made my life in rugby such a wonderful experience. I would especially like to thank everyone at London Wasps, they have given me such tremendous support at all times through my career but particularly of late, and I am sorry that I won’t get to repay them for that. Finally, I would like to thank my friends and family for their constant support through everything I have done.”

London Wasps Director of Rugby Dai Young said: “This is incredibly sad news for Tom and for everyone at the club. His attitude and commitment to the Club remained hugely constant even when he was out injured and I know his presence will be missed around the squad. Reesy though is a very resilient and intelligent man and I have no doubt whatever he does with his career he will make a success of it. On behalf of everyone at Wasps I want to wish him all the best in the future. We will be here to support him in any way we can.”

London Wasps owner Steve Hayes added.“It is very sad news for all of us that Tom has been forced to retire. On and off the pitch he has been a wonderful ambassador for both London Wasps and the game of rugby itself and he will be sorely missed at the Club. Tom can be extremely proud of everything he has achieved in the game in London Wasps colours despite having his career cut short and I speak for everyone when I say I wish him all the very best in the next chapter of his life.”

An outstanding product of the London Wasps Academy, Tom Rees joined Wasps in 2003, bursting onto the scene in the 2004/5 season as a highly talented young back-row forward and his performances impressed enough to earn him a senior contract. He was part of the 2007 Heineken Cup winning team and in 2008 he ended another great season with an opening try in the Premiership final win against Leicester Tigers.

On the international scene, Rees has represented England at almost all levels including U16, U18, U19, U20s and Senior levels as well as playing for England Sevens. He won 15 full senior caps winning his first as a replacement against Scotland in the 2007 RBS 6 Nations and was subsequently named in the 2007 World Cup squad. He also played in the 2008 and 2009 Six Nations though a variety of injuries hampered his chances of adding to his tally.

England Head Coach Stuart Lancaster said: “We all recognise Tom’s qualities as a player and a person and it’s going to be a shame that he will never be able to display his talent on the world stage again. However he has tremendous attributes as an individual and a leader. I am sure he will go on to become very successful in his future career and all the players and management here in the England camp wish him well on that journey.”

Damian Hopley CEO of the RPA said: “It is devastating news that Tom has had to leave the game in the middle of his career. For someone who made such an immediate impact for both Wasps and England to have to walk away from the game he loves at the age of 27 is shattering. Not long ago Tom was tipped to be a future captain of England so this proves just how cruel the game can be that he was never able to fulfil his undoubted potential.

“Tom is an extremely popular player who is hugely respected by his peers and coaches for his attitude, commitment and high standards. He is also a very intelligent young man who we have been working with closely through the Player Development Programme to access further education options and I have no doubt that he has the aptitude and determination to fulfil his ambition of gaining a degree in medicine. On behalf of everyone at The RPA, I would like to wish Tom every success for the future and we look forward to working with him and helping him through these challenging times.”

Ospreys Director of Coaching, Scott Johnson, commented:

“This stage of the tournament is always a crucial time, with the double headers pivotal to how the pool works out. We’ve got two tough games back to back against the English champions, but we’ve got our fate in our own hands. How far we go in terms of reaching the knockout stages is down to us, nobody else.

“Saracens are a big, strong team with a dominant pack so we know where it’s going to be won or lost. Selection has been tough given the form of the guys who played in the last two league games, but we think we’ve gone with a 23 that will be up for the job. Make no mistake about it, everyone of them will have a big part to play.

"Tom continues as captain because we feel he’s earned the right over the last few weeks. He’s led by example, he’s performed well, and with Justin having been away with Wales he’s really taken the opportunity and impressed as a captain. We’ve got a number of experienced leaders and captains in the squad but Tom has the armband on merit.

“It’s going to be tough, it’s going to be a real battle, and we know what we’ve got to do there. We want to bring something back to the Liberty from this game, so that we’ve got everything to play for when they come to ours next Friday. We’ve got a proud home record and with our fans here to really get behind us like they did in the Munster match, it promises to be a big night for Ospreys Rugby.”
