Joe Schmidt Preview & Leinster Squad Update

Leinster’s training session in UCD on Tuesday was cancelled as assembling the squad was deemed impossible in the conditions and the province will attempt to find somewhere to train on Thursday or Friday of this week to start their preparations ahead of the Magners League interprovincial derby against Ulster in Ravenhill on Monday, 27th December (KO: 4pm).

Leinster look set to be without a number of players who are being rested as part of the IRFU Player Welfare Programme. With a five day turnaround to contend with ahead of the visit of Connacht to the RDS on New Year’s Day there will be opportunities for youth to stake a claim.

A question mark remains over the availability of Eoin O’Malley (rib) who missed the 24-8 victory over ASM Clermont Auvergne at the weekend and his progress will be monitored over the coming days. Aside from that the province didn’t suffer any fresh injury concerns from the Aviva Stadium encounter.

With three busloads of supporters from the Official Leinster Supporters Club (OLSC) set to travel to Belfast, Leinster will be boosted by the backing of several hundred followers ahead of two crunch derbies. Already close to 15,000 tickets have been sold for the Connacht game in the RDS and tickets are still on sale from www.leinsterrugby.ie and from the usual outlets.

Speaking ahead of the clash, Coach JOE SCHMIDT said that the team are focused on facing the challenge of an in-form and well-drilled Ulster side up in Ravenhill.

“The extra couple of days rest are much needed after the rigours of a six day turnaround and two really physical games against Clermont, so the players feel somewhat refreshed and are looking forward to the Ulster game. We’ll need to have a mix of a bit of courage and greater accuracy to get a win and we know that.

“If I’m brutally honest, we know that we let ourselves down a bit in the last half hour at the weekend. We weren’t as accurate as we’d been in the first 50 or so minutes and our intensity dropped, allowing them back into the game while we missed out on a bonus point. In saying that it was a massive positive to get the four points and lead Clermont 5 (points) to 4 over the two games.

“With the weather turning again this week, this has meant that our on-field preparations have been affected somewhat, but we’ll work hard irrespective. There will be changes because a number of international players are missing, so that will present an opportunity for others and we’ll have to be right on the money against Ulster because they are a very good side who are brimming with confidence just now.

“I was interested to read Brian McLaughlin’s comments after their win over Bath last weekend when he said that he didn’t think that they played that well. That’s a warning to us and if they play better again, they will definitely be a real handful.

“They have quality all over the park and the nature of these interprovincial derbies is special because there’s competition for places in the Irish squad as well as having important league points up for grabs and provincial pride to play for. They have recruited smartly and you can see that they’re gelling from week to week.

“Tom Court has done really well and obviously has the confidence of the national coaching panel, and even though Rory Best may be missing, they have two good young hookers who have impressed me.

“BJ Botha is a quality performer, as is Johann Muller and I’m well aware of his qualities and those of Ruan Pienaar from their time with the Sharks when I was coaching in Auckland. Ian Humphreys has kicked really well and with Paddy Wallace’s deft touches and quick feet combining with Darren Cave in the midfield, we’ll have to be sound defensively.

“It’s an exciting time in the year for our supporters because they have a bit more time to get to matches and that support is appreciated by everyone in the set-up. If they can be as vocal as they were last weekend that would be a really big plus for us. We want to start the New Year in as positive a fashion as possible and it kick-starts an important period because Connacht will travel to the RDS with confidence based on the last few years where the games between the two teams have been tight affairs.

“But, for us, it’s about Ulster this week. They’re a quality side and they’re coming into the game on a high; it will be a really tough contest.”

Extended Ireland Women’s Squad Named

Ireland Women’s Coach Philip Doyle has named an extended squad of 34 for the first training camp this season. The squad features many of the players who helped Ireland to their highest ever finish at the Women’s World Championship earlier this year while also featuring a few new faces.

Last season’s captain Fiona Coghlan and Ireland’s most capped woman Lynne Cantwell are among a host of experienced players named in the squad.

Four players are unavailable through injury: Tania Rosser continues her rehab from the injury she picked up at the World Championship while newcomer Eliza Downey while Shannon Houston and Alison Miller are also ruled out at this stage.

Lauren Day, who missed out on the World Championship when she picked up an injury in training, returns to the squad and there are some new faces in the likes of Stacey Lee Kennedy, Jean Moore and Larissa Muldoon.

The back-room team sees the addition of Keith Murphy as Assistant Coach while Greg McWilliams will join the Management during the preparations for the 6 Nations.

IRFU Announce National Talent Squads

The Irish Rugby Football Union today announced 94 selected players for the Ireland U18 Club, U18 School and U19 National Talent Squads for the season.

The National Talent Squads are part of the IRFU’s High Performance pathway and consist of underage players who have been identified at this point in their development for progression to international team representation.

The selection process has been based on their interprovincial competition performances and also the national screening camps that took place during October. Once the players are named in the squad for this season, they are continually assessed on all aspects of their rugby progression from skills to physical development.

IRFU High Performance Manager Allen Clarke said, “The announcement of the National Talent Squads reflects significant advancements in our elite player development programmes. This progress has been greatly assisted by the contribution of schools, clubs and the number of quality volunteers who add significant value through their commitment and support of the RDS (regional development squad) programme. The players have been selected following their performances in the interprovincial competitions in September and national screenings in October.

“Playing rugby for their schools or clubs, they receive additional specific support from provincial academy experts, based on individual needs to prepare them for the respective International fixtures at Ireland Club U18′s, Ireland Schools U18′s and Ireland U19′s. It is important to note that the squads are not ‘ring fenced’ – performances of all players continue to be evaluated through the game allowing for late developers and rewarding performances on the field.”

Ulster Squad Named For Edinburgh Match

Coach Brian McLaughlin has named a 27 man Ulster panel ahead of announcing his starting XV and replacements for this Friday’s match against Edinburgh at Ravenhill (ko 8.05pm) later this week.

With two wins from two in the League to date, Ulster will be looking to consolidate their good start to the season but following last weekend’s winning performance against Aironi, the coaching staff were adamant that there is plenty to work on.

Rory Best, who was injured in the opening match against the Ospreys and rested for last weekend’s trip to Aironi is included in the panel, as is prop BJ Botha, who returned to Belfast last week following the conclusion of the Tri Nations.

Andrew Trimble could be set to make an earlier then expected return to rugby following finger surgery this summer and has been named alongside the man who was brought into the squad as his short-term cover, USA Eagle Paul Emerick.

Edinburgh defeated Ulster 13-16 on their last visit to Ravenhill, something Ulster will want to ensure there is no repeat of this Friday, but the Ulstermen will be vary of the Scottish side, who come to Belfast on the back of two League defeats.
