Fraser strikes as Saxons beat Wolfhounds

O2 Ireland Wolfhounds 10 England Saxons 14

WILL FRASER’S late try rewarded England Saxons for their display of forward power against an experienced Ireland Wolfhounds side in Galway.

A Saxons outfit with an average age of less than 23 – and sharing that same number of international caps – might have made really heavy weather of facing an experienced Ireland side away from home.

Instead they soaked up first half pressure playing into the wind, dominated long spells and then snatched the vital score inside the last 10 minutes.

Saracens flanker Fraser produced an athletic dive into the corner to finish off a sustained spell of pressure. Fly half George Ford added three difficult penalties and controlled the latter stages with maturity to make sure of the result.

Head Coach Jon Callard had a side with plenty of back line tyros in the shape of Elliot Daly, Christian Wade and Joel Tomkins, who all showed up well despite a limited number of chances coming their way.

More prominent were the traditional virtues, though, with Gloucester loose head Nick Wood the dominant influence series of scrums from which the Wolfhounds were lucky to escape without conceding a penalty try before the interval.

They were 10-0 to the good then, having piled round the back of a succession of lineouts for Leinster’s Kevin McLaughlin to force his way over in the right-hand corner 10 minutes into the game with Paddy Jackson converting. The Ulster fly half then added a penalty five minutes before half time.

But even with the wind in their favour the Wolfhounds were troubled. Andrew Trimble had batted away one potential scoring pass from Jordan Crane that was floated towards Bath’s Tom Biggs and Daly ensured the visitors finished the half on a high with a chip and chase halted five metres from the line.

Declan Fitzgerald replaced the struggling Michael Bent at tight head, but the Wolfhounds conceded another penalty five minutes later so that Ford, who hit the post with his only first half effort, could get his side on the board at last.

He struck again in the 62nd minute when the Wolfhounds went in at the side of a ruck before the sustained handling phases that led to Jackson’s finish wide on the right. Half a dozen players handled before he struck with the Television Match Official judging he had got the ball down before being bundled into touch.

Ford couldn’t convert but made it 14-10 with an excellent third effort five minutes from time, just reward from a gritty evening’s work from England’s rising stars.

The blend of forward power and pace in the back line makes it an exciting one to be involved with.

“We’re facing an experienced Irish side in this opening game and the challenge is to step up and deliver a high quality performance in front of a passionate crowd in Galway.”

Kvesic, Botha and Monye called up to England training squad

MATT KVESIC (Worcester Warriors), Mouritz Botha (Saracens) and Ugo Monye (Harlequins) have been called up to the England training squad to prepare for the RBS 6 Nations.

Kvesic reported to the camp in Leeds this evening as injury cover for Exeter Chiefs’ Tom Johnson (knee) while Botha will arrive tomorrow in place of Northampton Saints’ Calum Clark (shoulder). Johnson and Clark will remain at their clubs for treatment.

Monye will join the squad as cover while players competing in the weekend’s Heineken Cup are assessed by the England medical team.

Jamie Gibson of London Irish replaces Kvesic in the Saxons squad for their games against 02 Ireland Wolfhounds in Galway on Friday, January 25 and Scotland A at Kingston Park, Newcastle seven days later.

Also included are Harlequins’ Rob Buchanan, Gloucester Rugby’s Nick Wood, Saracens’ George Kruis, Leicester Tigers’ prop Kieran Brookes for the injured David Paice (London Irish), Nathan Catt (Bath Rugby), Tom Palmer (London Wasps) and Henry Thomas (Sale Sharks) respectively, while Jordan Crane (Leicester Tigers) replaces Billy Vunipola (London Wasps) who is training with the Senior squad.

The Saxons meet at Surrey Sports Park tomorrow before flying to Galway on Thursday and Head Coach Jon Callard said: “Rather than take the whole squad into camp we have cut it down to really focus on this young and dynamic group who’ve been in good form this season and have got lots to offer England in the future. Both games provide us with a really tough test and will be a great way to measure their potential and progress.”

The Saxons side will be named at 9am on Thursday, January 24.

Billy Twelvetrees called up to England senior elite squad–full squad details and Saxons squad details

154370997DR103_England_TraiEngland Head Coach Stuart Lancaster today announced the revised January 2013 Senior and England Saxons Elite Player Squads.

There are seven changes from the July 2012 Senior squad, with call-ups for Freddie Burns (Gloucester Rugby), Calum Clark (Northampton Saints), James Haskell (London Wasps), Joe Launchbury (London Wasps), David Strettle (Saracens), Billy Twelvetrees (Gloucester Rugby) and Tom Youngs (Leicester Tigers).

The requirement for an eight-man replacements’ bench during the RBS 6 Nations means that the Senior squad has been extended to 33 and Mako Vunipola (Saracens) moves from the Saxons as the additional player.

There are seven changes to the Saxons squad with Elliott Daly (London Wasps), Kyle Eastmond (Bath Rugby), Will Fraser (Saracens), Shaun Knight (Gloucester Rugby), Ed Slater (Leicester Tigers), Joel Tomkins (Saracens) and Billy Vunipola (London Wasps) all making their first appearances this season. Billy Vunipola will train with the senior squad in Leeds (January 20-25) while Tom Croft (Leicester Tigers) continues his return-to-play programme.

England Head Coach Stuart Lancaster said: “The fact that we have spent significant time deliberating over quite a few players shows how tough the competition is to get into this 65 and the strength in depth that is emerging. We have made some changes to both squads and we feel that reflects the players’ form during the first half of the season. There will undoubtedly be movement between the two squads as we go through the RBS 6 Nations and that was evident in the QBE Internationals, with players in form pushing through such as Freddie Burns, Joe Launchbury, Tom Youngs and Mako Vunipola.

"This is a very important year for England, with the Six Nations and the Saxons games to look forward to so there are some great opportunities for the players to demonstrate their club form at international level. The summer tour to Argentina will also be a great chance for those players pushing for a place, especially with some of our Senior squad hopefully going with the Lions, and chances will undoubtedly arise as we hope to play two midweek games as well as the two Tests.”

The Senior squad will attend a training camp at West Park Leeds RFC between Sunday, January 20 and Friday, January 25 before meeting up at Pennyhill Park, Bagshot on Sunday, January 27 to prepare for England’s RBS 6 Nations opener against Scotland at Twickenham Stadium on Saturday, February 2 (4pm).

The Saxons will meet up on Monday, January 21 at Surrey Sports Park ahead of their match against the 02 Ireland Wolfhounds in Galway on Friday, January 25 (7.35pm).

The England Under-20s Elite Player Squad will be announced via email at 1200 on Thursday, January 10.

England squad for autumn internationals

England have announced the squad to prepare for the first QBE International against Fiji at Twickenham Stadium on November 10.

Thirty-two players will meet at St George’s Park, Burton on Sunday, including James Haskell (London Wasps), Ugo Monye (Harlequins), Mako Vunipola (Saracens) and Tom Youngs (Leicester Tigers) – all promoted from the England Saxons Elite Player Squad as injury replacements for Tom Croft, Ben Foden, Alex Corbisiero and Rob Webber respectively.

England Head Coach Stuart Lancaster said: “As a coaching team we can’t wait to go into camp and get the guys focused on what will be a massive challenge in the QBE Internationals – Fiji and then the three major Southern Hemisphere teams in successive weeks.

“We have been impressed with some of the rugby we have seen in the Aviva Premiership and Heineken Cup and are looking forward to the players bringing that form to Twickenham.

“It’s great to be able to give Mako a chance in the squad. He has come through our age grade sides and made a real impact at Saracens. Likewise Tom Youngs,  who was with us on tour in South Africa, and we know what James Haskell and Ugo Monye are capable of if they get their opportunity.”

England will be at the Football Association’s new sports training and development centre from Sunday, October 28 to Thursday, November 1 before returning to their usual training base of Pennyhill Park, Bagshot on Sunday, November 4 ahead of the Test against Fiji.

Meanwhile, the England Saxons coaching team has been finalised, with John Fletcher joining as backs coach for the internationals against the O2 Ireland Wolfhounds and Scotland A in the New Year.

The former Newcastle Falcons boss returns to Kingston Park on Friday, February 1 for the match against the Scots, a week after the Saxons face the Wolfhounds in Ireland.

Fletcher, the England Under 18 Head Coach and RFU’s Professional Player Development Manager, will join Head Coach Jon Callard, with Simon Hardy responsible for the forwards.

Callard said: "We are delighted to have John on board as we focus on winning two demanding games. His expertise working with a wide group of players makes him a perfect fit for England Saxons and he’ll bring tremendous passion to the role."
