Mallinder signs new contract with the Saints

Jim MallinderNorthampton Saints today announced that director of rugby Jim Mallinder has signed a new contract with the club, which will extend his tenure at Franklin’s Gardens until at least 2015.

In just five short years Mallinder has taken the Saints from the pain of relegation to being considered one of the top clubs in Aviva Premiership Rugby and in the Heineken Cup.

Indeed the club has not enjoyed such consistent levels of success – four trophies; five finals in five years, including the 2011 Heineken Cup final; and three successive Aviva Premiership Rugby semi-finals – since the 1950s and 60s.

Individuals have also flourished under the Yorkshireman’s guidance, with a modern-day record of eight players chosen in England’s 2012 Six Nations Elite Player Squad and no fewer than six England regulars having made their international debut since joining the club.

Mallinder has also rejuvenated the Saints Academy, appointing Dusty Hare to manage a production line which is now providing the first team squad with a steady stream of exciting young and talented players.

Already Aviva Premiership Rugby’s longest-serving current director of rugby, by the end of his new contract Mallinder will have been in charge of the team at Franklin’s Gardens for eight years, stability which chairman Leon Barwell says is vitally important for the continued growth and development of the club.

“Jim signing his new contract is terrific news for the club and underpins our aspirations for the future,” he said. “As we see so often in sports across the world having continuity of management is crucial in a club’s long-term success, and this is exactly what Jim brings to the Saints.

Saints team named for Aviva Premiership Rugby semi-final

Northampton-SaintsThe Northampton Saints team has been named for tomorrow’s Aviva Premiership Rugby semi-final against Harlequins, being played at the Twickenham Stoop at 2:45pm.

After 22 Rounds of intense Aviva Premiership Rugby action the Saints confirmed their semi-final spot with last Saturday’s bonus point win over Worcester.

But while the Saints put five tries past the Warriors director of rugby Jim Mallinder says that the team will have to step up several gears for tomorrow’s trip to table-topping Harlequins.

“Harlequins have led the Premiership pretty much from start to finish, and will no doubt be feeling confident ahead of tomorrow’s game,” he said. “They have won plenty of big games in tough places and have a team which is playing with confidence.

“The forwards have been providing good ball and Nick Easter, Danny Care and Nick Evans have been guiding the rest of the team into the right areas of the field.

“It is going to be a very difficult game for us, but I believe that we have the right mentality and players to be able to get the result we want. Training has been intense and positive this week and everyone has been focused on the challenge in front of them.

“We know we have the team to do well, now it is up to the players to show what they can do.”

Tomorrow’s game sees Ben Foden become the fourth Saint this season to hit his century of appearances in the black, green and gold – the others being Chris Ashton, Lee Dickson and Roger Wilson – and Mallinder paid tribute to the full back.

“We have seen Ben develop his game consistently over the past few years, and he is now one of the important players we have at Franklin’s Gardens,” the Saints boss added. “He has had an outstanding season for us and has shown how good he is at international level as well.

“He is still improving, however, and with the new contract he signed earlier in the season I’m looking forward to seeing him play many more times for the Saints.”

Tickets remain available for tomorrow’s game at the Twickenham Stoop. Supporters who want to travel should contact the Harlequins ticket office directly.

Ali Hepher Previews Chief’s match against Saints

Exeter Chiefs assistant coach Ali Hepher says his side will use the confidence gained from recent wins in the Aviva Premiership as the attacking springboard for Sunday’s top flight encounter with Northampton Saints at Sandy Park (2pm).

Having moved back into the top four – leapfrogging the Saints along the way – following last weekend’s last-gasp victory over Worcester Warriors, the Chiefs know they are within touching distance of booking themselves a place in the end of season play-offs.

For that to happen, however, the Devon club must not only see off Jim Mallinder’s outfit, but at the same time prevent their rivals from securing any kind of bonus point from their travels.

Currently the Chiefs – who last weekend secured Heineken Cup rugby for the first time in the club’s history – lead the Saints by two points in the standings after the East Midlanders came unstuck on home soil to in-form Leicester Tigers.

Up against his former club, Hepher (pictured) admits he is relishing this weekend’s match-up and believes the Chiefs have what it takes to "kick on" and achieve even greater things this term

"We want to progress," he said. "We feel we are in form; the guys are training well and it’s an exciting opportunity for us to try and take. Securing Heineken Cup rugby for next season is fantastic, but let’s kick on and see if we can do even better."

Overcoming the star-studded Saints will be no formality for the Chiefs, who crashed 33-3 in the reverse fixture at Franklin’s Gardens 33-3 back in October. That remains Exeter’s worst-ever loss since their elevation into the Premiership and Hepher hopes his side can put up a much improved display this time round.

Indeed, having reached the business end of the campaign, the Chiefs appear to have hit a rich vein of form at just the right time.

"These are the games you want to have," added Hepher. "The guys are very excited, they’re looking forward to it and as a team we’re going to go after it. For us it’s an opportunity to test ourselves against one of the best sides probably in Europe.

"Right now we’re in a rich vein of form and we’ll certainly take confidence from the performances we have put in over the last few weeks. Of course there are things we have looked to improve on from last week, but the one thing I can’t fault is character within this group of players. They are digging deep when they need it most and that’s a huge testament to them. They work hard at not only being good team-mates, but also being a strong team as well."

Such unity within the Exeter ranks is something Hepher has been quick to praise, particularly from those who have found themselves on the periphery of the action.

"We’ve got a lot of competition for places right now and that’s what you want," said Hepher, a former European Cup winner with the Saints. "Certainly the guys outside of the squad are pushing hard and they are an important part of the squad make up.

"It’s those guys that aren’t quite making the first team that have been exceptional in their preparation. They work hard every week to give the guys on the field the best chance of winning. And as I said, the whole squad stick together; they work hard together and they enjoy themselves together; so for us as coaches to have those options and that quality, we couldn’t be happier."

As always the Chiefs have left no stone unturned in their preparations for what is arguably one of the biggest fixtures in the club’s history. And having reviewed countless hours of video footage, Hepher is well aware of the threat posed by Mallinder’s men.

"They’ve got threats all over the field," he warned. "Up front they’ve got big ball carriers and it goes right through to full-back where they have a world class player in Ben Foden. Equally, we are just focusing on what we can do and if we can create our own pressure and cause them problems, then hopefully we can get a good result."

Much has been made of Exeter’s impressive second half to the season, one in which they have lost only once in the league since the turn of the year.

"Obviously things change throughout the season," said Hepher. "Looking back we started well and were playing in a similar style to now, but through the winter weather conditions and pitches change, so you’ve got to adapt your game plan accordingly. We don’t try and play the same way every week, we create a separate game plan for each game based on the opposition, the conditions, whatever.

"Everything comes into the mix in terms of how we prepare, but the main thing is we want guys out there who make good decisions and that’s what you’re seeing now. We’ve got a team who play together; they talk rugby together; plus they make decisions and seek solutions together, so it’s a nice blend for us."

Team news for the Chiefs sees head coach Rob Baxter recall Kiwi centre Jason Shoemark (pictured) back into the midfield alongside Bryan Rennie, so Phil Dollman reverts back to full-back and Luke Arscott is the man who makes way. On the bench, the sole change sees Welsh international Craig Mitchell return at the expense of former Saints favourite Chris Budgen.

Although Budgen misses out, another former Northampton man, Brett Sturgess, is included after making his 100th league appearance for the Chiefs last Saturday. That feat will be matched tomorrow by skipper Tom Hayes, whilst No.8 Richard Baxter will be running out for his 350th league appearance in Exeter colours.

Saints team named for sold-out derby day

The Northampton Saints team has been named for tomorrow’s Aviva Premiership Rugby East Midlands derby, which will be played out in front of a packed Franklin’s Gardens.

Both teams are coming into the game on the back of a string of positive performances and results, and with just three rounds of Aviva Premiership Rugby remaining are very much in the hunt not just for a play-off spot but a home semi-final as well.

“It’s a big game,” director of rugby Jim Mallinder said this week. “Obviously Leicester are our local rivals, but we know that we’ve got three games to go in the regular season and we want to win all three to give us a chance of a home semi-final. That’s what we’re aiming for and I’m sure that everyone’s going to be up for Saturday’s game.

“We’ve certainly been focused solely on tomorrow’s game this week and have not been talking about what has gone before. We’ve trained hard and have prepared for what’s going to come at us on Saturday. Leicester are physical up front and love the set piece, but they like to play a bit too and get on the front foot. So we’ll have to be at the top of our game.”

Tomorrow’s game is completely sold out. However supporters can watch it live and exclusively on ESPN Classic (free to Sky Sports and Virgin Media XL subscribers) or listen to match commentary on BBC Radio Northampton.

The Saints’ official Facebook page and Twitter feed will have the usual match blog and score updates respectively.

Youngs returns to Tigers starting line-up to face Saints

England international scrum-half Ben Youngs returns to the Leicester Tigers line-up for Saturday’s Aviva Premiership Rugby trip to neighbours Northampton Saints.

Youngs missed the bonus-point win over Worcester Warriors in the team’s last outing as he served a one-week suspension and he is re-united with international colleague Toby Flood at half-back.

Horacio Agulla, George Skivington and Geoff Parling are included in the team after missing the Worcester fixture.

Tigers director of rugby Richard Cockerill said: “Tigers versus Saints is always a big match, no matter what is at stake. Both teams are chasing a place in the semi-finals and this promises to be another big occasion.

“These are two good set-piece teams, with two good sets of backs, and these games have been great contests.”
