Wales and Scarlets hooker Matthew Rees is likely to require surgery on the groin tear which saw him carried off on a stretcher against Australia at the Millennium Stadium last Saturday in the final clash of the Invesco Perpetual Series of 2009.

Ospreys wing Shane Williams, who withdrew with a hamstring injury early in the first half, will not require surgery but will be in rehabilitation for a period of four to six weeks.

Squad captain Ryan Jones should be back in training this week after a back injury forced him to watch from the sidelines at the weekend and Leigh Halfpenny has joined the Baa-Baas squad still undergoing treatment for a dead leg.

Dafydd Jones: immediate operation on A/C joint

Wales and Scarlets back row forward Dafydd Jones will undergo surgery this afternoon (Monday) on the shoulder injury he picked up against New Zealand during the Millennium Stadium’s Invesco Perpetual Series opener on Saturday.

Jones will miss the rest of the four-match series, with Samoa up next this Friday night before Argentina and then Australia come to town, as well as a possible further three months of rugby, but he will not be replaced in head coach Warren Gatland’s now 28-man squad.

“Dafydd sprung his A/C joint on Saturday and the severity of the injury has lead to him undergoing a repair this afternoon,” said Wales physio Mark Davies.

“The prospects for recovery are good and we would anticipate him returning to play early in the New Year.”
