Kilbane Pleased With Leeds Performance

Rotherham Titans current longest serving player Jamie Kilbane was very satisfied with his personal and the team’s performance against Leeds Carnegie. Kilbane, a Titan since 2005, believes the green shoots of progress are starting to appear.

Giving his thoughts on Sunday’s match Jamie explained, “It was a much improved team performance from people who may not have played so well last week really; they went out of their way to redeem themselves. We kicked all of our kicks and we played in the correct parts of the field for the majority of the game.

“Second half we had a bit of a poor start, but I’m not sure if that was the referee trying to equal the penalty count as we had quite a lot in the first half. But I think we conceded more penalties than I thought we actually deserved to and that kind of let them back into the game at the end.

“I also think the score line flattered Leeds a bit, because it was no way near that close in the match and we were dominant for the majority of the game.

“I can understand the fans being nervous at the end and in the Championship anything can happen. But as professional rugby players you just have to maintain your composure. And you have to have confidence in your team mates that they are going to keep it tight and every ones going to do what they’re meant to do and that nobody is going to make any mistakes.”

Jamie had one of his best games in a Rotherham shirt, but he refuses to get carried away with himself and maintains both feet firmly on the ground as he analysis his own performance, “It’s a step in the right direction, but it’s still nowhere near as good as I can be I don’t think. But certainly I redeemed myself a little bit from last week. We worked a lot better as a unit in the front row and that gave us a lot more dominance than we’d had the week before.

“So what we need to do now is, again learn from this experience and find out and analyse what we’ve done wrong and try to put that right.
I suppose the concept is every game is a learning experience, trying to build and improving throughout the season.”

Jamie not one for basking in glory, already has his sights on the next game away at Plymouth Albion on Friday evening. Jamie is aware of the challenge that Albion will provide and said, “Plymouth away is always really difficult; to get any kind of result down there is an achievement, because they have a very individual style. I’ve not done any analysis on them so far this week, but it would be foolish of us to think that we are going to go down there and get an easy victory.

“Any victory you get on the road is incredibly difficult in this league and every team’s home ground is like a fortress. Every club wants to have an unbeaten home record because that’s their natural advantage. Plymouth is a tricky team, they’ve got good attacking backs and a solid set of forwards, so we are going to have to work very hard to come away with a result, but I think we’ve definitely got in us to do so.”

NG Dragons reinforce backline

The Dragons have signed Ulster Fullback and provincial Young Player of the Year Jamie Smith on a 3-year deal from Ulster. Smith joins scrum half Joe Bedford who has joined the region from Rotherham.

Smith graduated through the Phoenix Ulster Academy and made his senior debut against Leinster in December 2009. He has gone on to make 16 appearances for the Province, scoring three tries.

The former Campbell College student has represented Ireland at Schools’, U-19 and U-20 level. Smith’s game is based on speed, strength and dynamic footwork and he is equally comfortable at fullback or centre.

Leeds-born Bedford (26) comes to Newport from Rotherham Titans where he was the Club Captain.

“I’m really excited to be joining the Dragons,” says newly signed scrum-half Joe Bedford.

“I can’t wait to start playing for the region. I played at Rodney Parade in 2005 for England Under 21’s against Wales U 21’s. We were well beaten but I clearly remember the fans were magnificent in supporting their team. Not only were they encouraging and incredibly noisy but they showed they certainly know their rugby and were quick to applaud good play – even though not very much of it came for us”!

Bedford began his professional career in England with a season at Premiership club Saracens before moving to Rotherham for two years. While he was there he was spotted and signed by Leeds Carnegie where he spent three years – two in the Premiership and one in the English Championship. It was at Leeds that he came to play with, and under, player coach Darren Edwards.

At the end of last season Rotherham approached him to return as Club Captain where he has remained throughout the current season.

Joe and his wife Katie, plus their 20 month old daughter, have been house hunting in the area and have already settled on their new home in Caerleon. They plan to move in later this month.

“In plenty of time for pre season training,” says Joe, “and it’s about five minutes from the ground. I can’t wait for next season to start!”

“I’m delighted to have secured these 2 players,” said Dragons Director of Rugby Robert Beale. “Joe brings a great deal of experience and Jamie is a very exciting young talent. We’ve looked carefully at Joe and Jamie and we’re confident that they will fit in well with the style of rugby we are looking to develop at the Dragons.”

Connacht re-sign prop Hagan

Connacht Rugby have announced that prop Jamie Hagan has penned a 2 year contract deal with the club. The 23 year old from Balbriggan joined Connacht in 2009 from the Leinster academy and has appeared in 27 Magners League games and 11 Amlin Challenge Cup games for Connacht since then.

Hagan is capped for Ireland Youths (against Italy) and scored a try against England U18 in 2005 and was part of the Ireland U20 team, coached by Eric Elwood and Dan McFarland, which won the Six Nations grand slam in 2007.

The 6’ 3” 120kg tight-head prop has been a cornerstone of the Connacht scrum for the past season and a half and his commitment to Connacht for the next 2 years will see him remain at The Sportsground until 2013.

“I’ve really enjoyed myself here at Connacht and I’m really looking forward to playing with the Province for the next 2 seasons” said Hagan,

“The set-up is very good here with all the facilities on-site and the coaches are very fair to work with, if you work hard you are rewarded”
Connacht CEO Gerry Kelly said that this sign of commitment from such an integral part of the squad was very encouraging, adding:

“Jamie has really fitted into the Connacht setup and to have him commit to the Province for the next 2 seasons sends out a strong message.”

Head Coach Eric Elwood was equally as pleased stating: “We had followed Jamie’s progress as a young player, and obviously with his involvement in the Ireland U20 side Grand Slam winning in 2007 proved his ability so we knew his pedigree. He has excelled here at Connacht and we are very pleased that he has shown his commitment by signing a 2 year deal. Jamie is a huge part of our squad and we look forward to working with him over the coming months.
