Henson signs for Sarries

Gavin-Henson saracens Wales and Ospreys centre Gavin Henson has signed for English Premier club, Saracens.

After weeks of speculation, the Strictly Come Dancing star has finally agreed terms with both his old club and the new home for his prodigious talents. His agent Matt Ginvert says that Henson will return to action just as soon as his commitment to Strictly have been completed.

“Gavin is thrilled.” Ginvert commented. “He’s totally committed to see through Strictly Come Dancing and to do his best to win.”

He added: “He’s really looking forward to getting back on the rugby pitch when he is available to do so.”

Mike Cuddy, Ospreys’ Managing Director signalled his reluctant agreement to release Henson from his contract after protracted negotiations that involved rumoured threats of legal action from both sides. “It is necessary that we make the decision that we have in order to allow everyone to move forward,” he commented.

Saracens have lost Derick Hougaard to an Achilles injury that will see the fly-half out for the remainder of the season, which will open speculation as to where Henson will take his career. The talented back can play at fly-half, centre or full-back, but up to his leave of absence he was filling the role of inside-centre and defence co-ordinator for Wales. Seemingly settled in his new role, filling a need in modern rugby for a playmaker at what the southern hemisphere refers to as second five-eighth, questions marks will appear over whether he can continue in that role. Cardiff, Wales and Lions inside-centre Jamie Roberts has made the position his own and following the award of Player of the Series after the last Lions tour, he is widely seen as impregnable in the position.

There was some discussion of whether Henson could fill the Brian O’Driscoll role of a playmaker in the Outside-Centre position, but with his current move and James Hook playing brilliantly in the position it now seems more likely that the Swansea man will attempt to oust Stephen Jones from his position as Wales’s standoff.

Henson has expressed his wish to be in London, to be near his children, who live in the capital with their mother: his estranged wife, singer and TV personality, Charlotte Church.

Whatever position he plays in, it will, no doubt please Wales coach Warren Gatland, who now has an embarrassment of riches in key positions : Stephen Jones, James Hook and Henson can all play standoff half, the latter two and Jamie Roberts can play inside centre, and both Henson and Hook can deputise for Lee Byrne at full back. It gives the New Zealander a headache over how to shuffle his cards, but it’s a headache he will be glad to have.

Henson has won 31 caps for Wales and also toured New Zealand with the 2005 British and Irish Lions.

Halfpenny and Thomas claim Wales starts

Wales have made two changes from the starting line-up defeated by England at Twickenham in the RBS 6 Nations opener last weekend for the visit of Scotland to the Millennium Stadium on Saturday (kick-off 2.00pm).  In the second row Osprey Jonathan Thomas reforms his regional partnership with Alun-Wyn Jones at the expense of Dragons lock Luke Charteris. In the backs Leigh Halfpenny comes in for his Blues colleague Tom James on the wing.

Gethin Jenkins has recovered from his calf injury to be named on the bench and, in one of three changes there, he joins fellow Blues players Sam Warburton, who covers the back row, and centre or wing Tom Shanklin.

“Jonathan brings over 50 caps of experience to the tight five and offers us some extra mobility around the field,” said Wales coach Warren Gatland.

“Leigh is a recognised right wing who offers us an extra kicking option and his return to full fitness after limited training in the run up to the England game allows his selection.

“We think we have a very strong bench with the right mix of players each able to make an impact if called upon and are pleased to be able to name Gethin although he will undergo further fitness assessments later in the week.

“Tom Shanklin returns to provide another 65-caps worth of experience as cover for the backs and Sam Warburton comes in as back row cover with JT (Jonathan Thomas) now having been nominated as a starting second row.”

English ace Mullan signs new Warriors deal

Worcester Warriors are delighted to announce that Matt Mullan – one of England’s most promising and talented front-row forwards – has today signed a new two-year deal to remain at Sixways Stadium.

Mullan, named in the England Saxons EPS squad in July, was due to be out of contract at the end of the season, but has now put pen to paper early to commit his future to the Warriors until at least 2012.

The highly-rated 22-year-old’s prized signature underlines the ambition for success shared by both the player and club.

Bromsgrove School-educated Mullan, who had been attracting the attention of a host of top clubs, is among a rare breed of front row players who can figure at loose-head prop or hooker and his contribution and development has now been rewarded with a new contract by Director of Rugby Mike Ruddock.

Wales team v Argentina – Jonathan Davies starts – Lydiate on bench

Wales coach Warren Gatland has handed Scarlets centre Jonathan Davies his first Millennium Stadium start for the visit of Argentina in the Invesco Perpetual Series clash on Saturday (Kick-off 2.30pm).

The facial injury suffered by Tom Shanklin in the victory over Samoa gives Davies his chance with Gatland otherwise reverting to the starting line-up chosen to face New Zealand in the Series opener a fortnight ago.

And in a positional switch Blues centre Jamie Roberts moves to outside centre to accommodate Davies at No 12.

In forward changes from the team who beat Samoa Scarlets hooker Matthew Rees replaces Osprey Huw Bennett and Blues flanker Martyn Williams returns for regional team-mate Sam Warburton, with Bennett providing cover from the bench.

Biggar takes over at 10 as Wales announce five changes for Samoa

Ospreys star Dan Biggar starts at 10 for Wales

Ospreys star Dan Biggar starts at 10 for Wales

Wales have made five changes to the starting line-up who faced New Zealand last Saturday for the visit of Samoa to the Millennium Stadium in the Invesco Perpetual 09 Series clash on Friday night (Kick-off 7.30pm).

Ospreys fly-half Dan Biggar wins his fourth cap when he starts at half back with Dwayne Peel (Sale Sharks), who will be playing in his 70th international for his country.

Biggar made his debut against Canada in 2008 when both he and Peel joined the game from the bench and he figured twice on Wales’ recent summer tour to North America, where he partnered the Blues’ Gareth Cooper in the win over Canada and again came on as a replacement alongside Peel against USA.
