Hamilton and Paice suspended

Jim Hamilton (Gloucester Rugby) and David Paice (London Irish) were both suspended for seven weeks at an RFU Disciplinary Hearing today.

Hamilton and Paice were both sent off for striking in the Aviva Premiership match between sides at the Madejski Stadium on May 5.

Hamilton’s suspension runs until August 19, covering Scotland’s warm-up and tour matches this summer, and warm-up games at the start of next season.

Paice’s suspension runs from August 10 to September 23 next season.

The panel of His Honour Judge Jeff Blackett (chair), Robert Horner and Jeff Probyn considered that both offences required top-end entry points because they were committed after the players had been issued yellow cards.

Both players have a right of appeal.

Hamilton starts for Gloucester

Scotland international second row Jim Hamilton will make his first start since November 21stas Gloucester resume their LV= Cup campaign with a trip to Leeds Carnegie on Sunday.

Hamilton suffered a fractured metatarsal in Scotland’s 19-16 victory over Samoa in the Autumn internationals and has been patiently working his way back to fitness since that point.

Hamilton returns to partner Will James in the second row as Head Coach Bryan Redpath makes several changes to the side that defeated Agen in the Amlin Challenge Cup campaign last week.

Only Tom Voyce and Freddie Burns remain in the back line from that game and only James and Akapusi Qera amongst the forwards.

However, with Gloucester still well and truly in the mix in pool 3 of the LV= Cup, Redpath’s starting line up still features seven full internationals with two more on the bench.

Gloucester made the final of this competition last season having lost their opening two pool games and Pool 3 is very tight as things stand.

So, Redpath is under no illusions as to what needs to be done at a venue where Gloucester lost in the Aviva Premiership on New Year’s Day.

“If we’re going to progress in the tournament then we have to win away at Leeds. It’s irrelevant what happened up there a month ago. That just reinforces the mindset, not just about Leeds, but about everything.”

“We’ve got to concentrate on what we do. Last year was exactly the same. We needed two wins and two five pointers to go through and we did that.”

“We’ve some disruptions with players away for internationals so it’s a chance for some others to put their hands up. It’s a good test for us as a club to go up to Leeds and perform and we’ll see what comes out of it.”

Gloucester Rugby:

Charlie Sharples; Tom Voyce, Jonny May, Tim Molenaar, Lesley Vainikolo; Freddie Burns, Dave Lewis; Yann Thomas, Olivier Azam, Rupert Harden; Will James, Jim Hamilton; Alasdair Strokosch, Akapusi Qera, Matt Cox

Replacements:

Darren Dawidiuk, Nick Wood, Shaun Knight, Alex Brown, Peter Buxton, Jordi Pasqualin, Nicky Robinson, Tim Taylor

New Zealand schools team to play Australia schools

New Zealand Schools Coach Karl Jones and his Assistant Coach Andrew Douglas have named their team to play the one-off international against Australia Schools in Dunedin tomorrow.

Following last week’s resounding 65 – 3 win over Tonga Schools in Hamilton, the New Zealand Schools team battled against a solid Otago Under 19 side in Dunedin yesterday, winning 27 – 11.

Karl Jones said the game was just what the team needed heading into their match against Australia.

“Yesterday’s match was exactly the physical challenge we needed. We were tested in defence and had to launch a variety of attacks to penetrate the Otago line,” Jones said.

The team is expecting a tougher match against Australia but they will be looking to repeat their win against Australia last year.

“All the boys have put in some hard work and displayed some outstanding rugby in the past week. The number of quality players we had to choose from made selection of this team quite difficult.

“I’m confident that we have the team that will put us in the best position to take this game, but we’re not taking anything for granted. We know Australia will have a score to settle and will come out hard,” he said.

New Zealand Schools play Australia Schools at Otago Boys’ High School in Dunedin on Wednesday. Kick-off is at 11:45am. The match will be broadcast live on SKY Rugby Channel.

Hamilton set for Gloucester debut at the Madejski

gloucester Scottish international second row Jim Hamilton will make his debut for Gloucester Rugby as they travel to the Madejski Stadium for Sunday’s Aviva Premiership Rugby clash with London Irish.

Hamilton has been sidelined with a virus leaving him a frustrated spectator for Gloucester’s opening two fixtures but now packs down alongside Alex Brown in the second row.

Also returning to the starting line up is fellow Scotland international Alasdair Strokosch who starts at blindside with Brett Deacon moving across to number eight.

Able to call upon Hamilton’s services for the first time, Head Coach Bryan Redpath explained what he (Hamilton) will bring to the side.

“Jim’s another lineout option. He’s obviously a big man, he’s called lineouts for Scotland and Edinburgh and he takes a little bit of heat of Browny and puts a bit of heat on them as well.”

“He’s a big angry man. He’s 130kgs which hopefully he’s going to throw around. He’s here to be physical and that’s what we want.”

Talking to the media ahead of the game, Redpath was quick to pinpoint the key area of improvement from the first two games.

“Too many individual errors. I think 25 against Exeter and 17 last Saturday. We’re creating a huge amount of scoring opportunities but not finishing them off.”

“We’ve been far better than we have been previously defensively and in terms of discipline but need to show a little more patience and composure.”

“Irish are a good side. We’re playing away from home, four yellow cards last year down there. They have a dangerous back three. You kick poorly, you kick loosely and you’re going to get punished.”

“We have to have a very strong disciplined game to play against them. It’s a big challenge for us this weekend. But we need to be up for it. It’s about us and not all about the opposition.”

Gloucester Rugby:

Charlie Sharples; James Simpson-Daniel, Mike Tindall (capt), Eliota Fuimaono-Sapolu, Lesley Vainikolo; Nicky Robinson, Rory Lawson; Alasdair Dickinson, Scott Lawson, Pierre Capdevielle; Jim Hamilton, Alex Brown; Alasdair Strokosch, Andy Hazell, Brett Deacon

Replacements:

Olivier Azam, Nick Wood, Rupert Harden, Dave Attwood, Luke Narraway, Dave Lewis, Tim Taylor, Tim Molenaar

Eamon John regains the reigns of Scotland U20

Scottish Rugby has announced that Eamon John will resume his role as Scotland under-20 head coach.

John led the age-grade side to a fourth-placed finish in the 2009 6 Nations, defeating Wales (18-17), Italy (14-10) and Ireland (35-20) on home soil before acting as assistant coach for the 2009 IRB Junior World Championship in Japan.

He said: “We were pleased with our performance in the 6 Nations last year and I’m hoping we can continue in that vein.

“To win three out of five was no mean feat and it was credit to the group of players that delivered that; we were really pleased and proud of that group but every year brings a new challenge.
