Edinburgh team to face Aironi

A host of Edinburgh Rugby’s internationalists return to the fold for Friday’s RaboDirect PRO12 match against Aironi at Murrayfield as the team seek to retain a strong home record of six wins from eight matches (kick-off 7.30pm).

One week out from the Heineken Cup, Chris Paterson and James King are the only backs to retain a place in the starting line-up from last weekend’s defeat to Munster.

The pair are joined by returning wingers Lee Jones and Tim Visser, centre Nick De Luca and young stand-off Harry Leonard, who made his debut against the Italians in September.

The club’s international front-row trio of Allan Jacobsen, Ross Ford and Geoff Cross also return and pack down ahead of Argentine internationalist, Esteban Lozada, and the promising young Grant Gilchrist at lock.

The pack is completed by a back-row trio of Sean Cox, who recently put pen to paper on a two year deal, Roddy Grant and David Denton at number eight.

Having kicked off their Heineken Cup campaign with back-to-back wins over London Irish and Racing Metro, the club are keen to bring their European form into domestic business.

The capital club defeated the Italians home and away last season but left Parma in September with a losing bonus point, secured by Leonard’s boot.

Edinburgh Rugby head coach, Michael Bradley, said: “This is a big match for us because we lost to Aironi over in Italy. They played better than we did on the day and their set-piece dominated us.

“We do not want to lose twice to Aironi in a single season. We have to back up our European performances.

“With 25 minutes to go in the Racing Metro match the crowd were off their feet, they were clapping and roaring on the boys and to us on the sideline it was almost inevitable that we would get the try we needed.

“They all shared in a fantastic day and were a crucial part of that win. This is exactly what we need to impose our home advantage when teams come to Murrayfield.”

With the west stand supporters’ bar in the Presidents’ Suite unavailable for the next two home games (v Aironi and Cardiff Blues) as existing bookings are honoured, fans will be welcomed into the north stand supporters’ bar, located in the Rowan Suite (third floor), while season ticket holders can continue to use the Murrayfield Wanderers facility.

The west stand supporters’ bar will be back with a bang for the club’s 1872 Cup derby match against city rivals Glasgow Warriors, on Boxing Day, and will continue in the New Year at the RaboDirect PRO12 match against Ulster (Friday 6 January) and throughout the rest of the season.

Glasgow Warriors steeled for Aironi

Glasgow Warriors go on the trail of their fourth straight RaboDirect PRO12 win and a further pre-Heineken Cup lift when they travel to face Aironi on Saturday (kick-off 2.30pm local time, 1.30pm UK time).

Sean Lineen’s men went through October with a 100% record, beating Cardiff Blues away before home successes over Dragons and Ospreys.

They head to the Stadio Luigi Zaffanella looking for a repeat of the victory they recorded there back in April, when tries from Ryan Grant and Peter Murchie (pictured right) saw the Warriors edge a close affair 17-16.

That was Glasgow’s only league success on the road last season, and with Aironi’s Italian counterparts Benetton Treviso having won at Firhill six weeks ago, head coach Lineen knows it will take another “massive performance” for his troops to continue their fine recent run.

“It’s another huge game for us this weekend, and in terms of intensity, appetite and execution, we’re going to need to be exactly where we were against Ospreys to get a further win.

“We were pretty fortunate to come away with four points the last time we played Aironi on their home patch, and this time round we’re expecting another stern examination. The focus all week has been on making sure we meet that challenge head on and give our fans another big result ahead of the Bath game next weekend.”

In order to give as many players as possible an opportunity to stake a claim for selection in the Heineken Cup opener, Lineen has shuffled his pack this week, with only four members of the starting line-up from the Ospreys game also due to run out in Lombardy.

The match-day 23 does, however, boast six players who represented Scotland at the recent Rugby World Cup, and a further two, Grant and Johnnie Beattie, who were involved in the wider pre-tournament squad.

Captain Al Kellock has recovered from the calf complaint that saw him forced to withdraw from the Ospreys match on the day of the game and so starts alongside Richie Gray in the second row.

Come Saturday, Kellock will be in line to claim the record for the most individual minutes in the RaboDirect PRO12. Currently on 8536 minutes, the lock trails former Dragons winger Gareth Wyatt by 51 minutes with Cardiff’s Deiniol Jones (8533) in hot pursuit.

Elsewhere in the Glasgow team, Grant, who missed last Friday’s win with a sore knee, returns in an all-new front row where Dougie Hall and Ed Kalman also feature.

It’s all change in the back row, too, as James Eddie, John Barclay and Beattie replace Rob Harley, Chris Fusaro and Ryan Wilson.

Behind the scrum, Chris Cusiter again teams up with Duncan Weir, who has kicked 47 points in his last two outings. Ruaridh Jackson is still to recover fully from the hamstring injury he suffered against England at the Rugby World Cup.

In the centres, Alex Dunbar makes his first start of the season outside summer signing Troy Nathan, Federico Aramburu comes in for Colin Shaw and Murchie enjoys his first outing of the campaign at full-back, having recovered from a shoulder complaint.

Lineen said: “We’d always planned to employ a degree of rotation between the Ospreys and Aironi games, both to keep the side fresh and hungry and to see who really put their hand up as we enter a busy and vital period in our season.

“Guys like Rob Harley, Tom Ryder and Chris Fusaro will benefit from not being involved this weekend, and it’s great to be able to replace them with real quality. It’s also fantastic to have Al, Ryan and Peter back from injury, and to see Alex getting a well-earned first start this term.”

Lineen today announced his team at Yorkhill Hospital, where it was confirmed that Yorkhill Children’s Foundation are to be an official charity partner of Glasgow Warriors for the next two seasons.

Grant and Murchie were also on hand to meet some of the hospital’s young patients, five-year-old Greg Steven and 12-year-old Natalie Wardropper (pictured above and below).

Yorkhill Hospital has touched millions of lives, including those of Warriors players past and present, since it first opened its doors in 1882. It exists to help sick children get better, yet it does so much more. As the largest children’s hospital in Scotland, Yorkhill has a worldwide reputation for excellence, treating over 150,000 children from across Scotland every year.

Yorkhill Hospital is the sole Scottish provider of a number of highly specialised services including cardiac surgery, kidney and bone marrow transplants, paediatric intensive care and endoprosthetic bone replacement. It is also one of the only four UK children’s hospitals with an ECMO machine offering life support for children.

Established in 2001, Yorkhill Children’s Foundation funds many vital projects that are invaluable to the treatment, care, physical and mental wellbeing of children and their families from throughout Scotland and beyond who are treated at Yorkhill Hospital and related facilities.

These projects include: innovative medical equipment; improvements in child and family facilities; patient and family support; paediatric research and training; entertainment and fun activities for the children.

As a Glasgow Warriors charity partner, Yorkhill Children’s Foundation will use player appearances to promote and enhance events, and will also have the opportunity to fundraise directly at one of the club’s Heineken Cup home games and via the club website.

Warriors chief executive Kenny Baillie said: “I’m delighted to welcome Yorkhill Children’s Foundation as the second of our three new charity partners. They’re a fantastic organisation who provide an invaluable service every year to countless families throughout the land, and we’re honoured to have them on board."

David Welch, head of fundraising, marketing and communications at Yorkhill Children’s Foundation, said: “We are delighted to have been chosen as one of the Glasgow Warriors charity partners and we are very much looking forward to working with the club over the coming two seasons.

“Every penny that they help us raise will go towards helping Yorkhill Children’s Foundation to continue to fund the projects which assist the staff at Yorkhill to provide the best possible care for Scotland’s sick children.

“The Warriors’ support will also help raise awareness of our charity, reaching out to rugby fans from all over the UK and beyond.”

Munster team for Aironi game

Keith Earls, Conor Murray, Ronan O’Gara, Donnacha Ryan, Paul O’Connell and Denis Leamy are all named in the Munster starting XV, (v Aironi, Musgrave Park Friday 8.30pm) for the first time this season while Donncha O’Callaghan is listed among the replacements alongside Tomas O’Leary who is also set to make his seasonal senior debut having had a run out with the A side in Galway last Friday.

Will Chambers is at outside centre which means a switch to 12 for Danny Barnes and the return of O’Connell naturally sees him take over as captain although Peter O’Mahony who assumed that role in O’Connell’s absence retains his place in the starting XV.

Five players – Johne Murphy, Doug Howlett, Barnes, Wian du Preez and O’Mahony – retain their places in the starting XV from the Ospreys game while James Coughlan missed that Ospreys clash through injury.

The selection reflects a certain urgency to get the RWC players back into action as coach Tony McGahan explained that Munster “need to hit the ground running.”

"I think you’ll have seen South African, English and other countries players come back and play as soon as they were out of the quarter finals. The Irish players had two weeks rest. We’re already at least a week and a bit behind so we need to look at all the possibilities and people who are going to be best for us short term and long term in this 4 week block that we have."

Marco Bortolami gets the Aironi armband

image Marco Bortolami is the new Aironi skipper for the 2011-2012 season.

The International lock, who is set to take part in his third Rugby World Cup this year, skippered Aironi in eleven games during last season and he now inherits the role from Quintin Geldenhuys.

With both Bortolami and Geldenhuys looking set to play in the Rugby World Cup Aironi’s head coach Rowland Phillips has chosen hooker Roberto Santamaria to lead the team for the first part of the RaboDirect PRO12 season.

“I have choosen Marco because of his great experience as a captain at the highest level (a record 37 times as the Italian Captain), and the RaboDirect PRO12 is an high level championship. He led the team several times during last season, he knows how to face the pressure a team will face during a RaboDirect PRO12 and Heineken Cup campaign – he is a natural captain” says Phillips

“Quintin did a great job for Aironi during a very tough first season, we had a great relationship that of course will continue during next season. But I want him to focus on his rugby. He’s a clutch player for us and I don’t want to put more pressure on him”.

“During the World Cup period Roberto Santamaria will captain the team. I need someone who has captaincy experience, someone who is positive and is respected by the team. Roberto thick all these boxes, he’s a hard worker, he wants to improve day after day, he i san example for his teammates. I’m sure he will do a great job”.

6N player of the series, Masi signs for Aironi

Andrea Masi, the Player of the Championship in the last Six Nations, has signed for Aironi.

The Italian international, a hero in Italy’s historic win against France, returns to Zaffanella Stadium, where he played for three Seasons from 2003 to 2006 before moving from France with first Biarritz and thenRacing-Metro Paris.

“I had the opportunity to stay in France with a new Top 14 club, but I decided to return in Viadana because I have a deep connection with the city and because I wanted to join a serious and structured club that is looking to improve and has a long term plan in which I want to be a main character”, said Masi.

Masi, 30, can play at fullback or centre and brings to Aironi his International experience with 60 caps and 13 tries scored for Italy.

After the World Cup (New Zealand 2011 will be the third of his career) Masi will join Aironi in the new RaboDirect PRO12 to help the Italian side to improve.

“I will bring all my experience to help Aironi reaching this target. I had a similar experience when I joined Racing-Metro – they were a ProD2 team with a long road to go, even if with a lot of ambition. We go through this to bring Racing to the top level both in France and Europe. Also Aironi have great room for improvement and I will give my all in order to realise it”.

“I have met with President Melegari and Director of Rugby Franco Tonni. Everyone is very excited and the club has great ideas and projects for the future. It makes me really happy for my choice”.

Director of Rugby Franco Tonni welcomed back Masi: “When I met Andrea a couple of days ago I immediately remembered eight years ago when he joined Viadana from L’Aquila. The high level of his rugby vision and professionalism which comes from his experience with Biarritz and Racing will be crucial for the side. Andrea will be a central part of the Aironi project in the years to come”.
