Some furor over the new "elite" division for the U18 Europeans as FIRA-AER have decided the Elite division will only contain the first four teams from the U18 6 Nations, the 5th and 6th place teams playing in "Division 1" which will also contain Romania, Georgia, Russia, Belgium, Germany and Portugal.

There is promotion and relegation in all divisions EXCEPT into the Elite division which will always be formed by 4 of the 6 6 Nation teams..

Elite Division:

Top 4 6 Nations Teams from this seasons tournament

Division 1:

5th & 6th placed 6 Nations plus Romania, Georgia, Russia, Belgium, Germany, Portugal

(bottom 2 relegated to Division 2)

Division 2:

Spain, Holland, Poland, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Lithuania, Sweden, Ukraine

(top 2 promoted to Div 1, bottom two relegated to Div 3)

Division 3:

Hungary, Serbia, Latvia, Luxemburg, Denmark, Austria, Moldova, Bulgaria

(top 2 promoted to Div 2, bottom two relegated to Div 4(?))

Why not 8 teams in "Elite" like everyone else??

Anyway, tournament is 16-22 April in Armagnac Bigorre

Division 1:

5th & 6th placed 6 Nations plus Romania, Georgia, Russia, Belgium, Germany, Portugal

(bottom 2 relegated to Division 2)

Unless they are from the 6 Nations! Even if the 5th and/or 6th place 6N team comes in the bottom two they cannot be relegated!

Division 3:

Hungary, Serbia, Latvia, Luxemburg, Denmark, Austria, Moldova, Bulgaria

(top 2 promoted to Div 2, bottom two relegated to Div 4(?))

Correction, bottom 1 is relegated to division 4/D and winner of tournament between Croatia, Bosnia Herzegovina and Isreal gets promoted to 3/C.

We only have two serious warm-up matches left before the U18 Championships in April. When you have a winter break in a season it is difficult to know how you will stack up against others once the game starts. On Saturday we travel to Hungary for what we hope will be the dress rehearsal of the Division 3 final, with either Serbia of Hungary being promoted to Division 2. We will of course have some stiff competition to overcome to reach that stage, with a tricky first match against Moldova and if we win that, a match between the winner of Latvia v Austria. This should be a real good test and an indication of where the two sides stand. Our final warm-up match will be the following weekend against Arad from Romania who we narrowly beat last October.

Watched the Russia v Portugal game as it was on after us on the same pitch. I had high expectations from this but it was not as good as I had hoped. Portugal had a lot of the ball but handling errors and blind passes cost them a number of opportunities. They clearly had speed in the side but didn't use it effectively. The Russians were quite solid in defence but limited in their attacking game plan.

Looks like Romania have now had two very disappointing championships in a row, saw their first game against Scotland where they were blown away once Scotland got into their stride and see they lost to Belgium yesterday.

Against Latvia we let one try in early through a sloppy pass but otherwise another very solid defence performance, much better control at the breakdown, good possession and territory but again poor ball movement through the centre prevented us from making this as comfortable as it should have been. Through to the final though so we are up against Hungary on Friday at 1830. We training with England today which was a great experience for the guys.

Today's matches:

Group B http://www.fira-aer-rugby.com/group-40.htm

Switzerland v Netherlands (1500) - relegation match, loser to Group C. Big surprise for Netherlands to be here as they have put a lot of resources into this age group and were ranked 2. They should win and therefore remain in the group, Switzerland to go down.

Ukraine v Poland (1700) - could be close, for 5th/6th so no big effect either way

Czech Republic v Lithuania (1630) - 3rd place play-off, think it should be the Czech team based on tournament performance so far

Spain v Sweden (1700) - Championship match, winner up to Group A. This really should be Spain but Sweden, ranked second bottom of the group and only promoted last year, have already pulled off a couple of shocks and successive promotions would be an incredible achievement

Group C http://www.fira-aer-rugby.com/group-41.htm

Bulgaria v Austria (1500) - Relegation match. Croatia has already won "Group D" and will replace one of these two for next year. It was expected for Bulgaria to be in this position but Austria has under-performed. The Austrians should be able to win this one and remain in the group.

Denmark v Moldova (1430) - 5th/6th match which I think the Moldovans will win. They played well against us and trounced Austria, Denmark lost heavily to Luxemburg and only squeaked past Bulgaria.

Luxemburg v Latvia (1630) - 3rd place play-off. This could be a really good match, Latvia very agressive and strong, Luxemburg with some quality in the side. I think Luxemburg should do this but it is hard to call.

Hungary v Serbia (1830) - Our championship match in Semeac, winner gains promotion to Group B which would be a historic achievement for us. We played Hungary two months ago in a training game, they won 34-14 but we were without our starting 9, 10, 11, 12, so although we know it will be tough we have some confidence that we can pull it off. I guess we will all know soon enough!

Fantastic result for us! 13-7, group C champions and promotion to group B! Next year we play in the group of Russia, Sweden, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Netherlands. This will be tough for us with our limited player base but we were well in control of our group C matches so might be able to at least survive group B. With only 6 or 7 of the squad still qualified for next year it will mean a big rebuild.

Elite division :

Ireland 34 – 24 Portugal, half time 26 - 10

Ireland took the early initiative and dominated possession and territory for the first quarter of the match but were unable to capitalise on this. Effective support running lines saw the Portuguese defence penetrated. However Portugal remained resilient, were competitive in the set-piece and capitalised on one of their few first half opportunities with a try and well executed conversion to them in the running. The second half saw the Irish revert back to putting pressure on the Portugal defence, however an interception try allowed Portugal to regain their confidence and turn around the pressure with a third try resulting. A competitive game ended with the Irish deserved winners but a proud Portugal performance which should give them confidence going forward in this tournament.

England 58 – 8 Georgia, half time 27 – 3

In spite of a very strong defence on the part of the Georgians, England who possessed great collective organization and individual flair dominated the encounter.
The absence of good collective play on the part of the Georgians was highlighted by the one on one confrontations.

Wales 41 – 8 Italy, half time 27 – 3

From the outset of the game Italy was under pessure and Wales scored easily. However the Italians were superior both in touch and in their scrum. In set pieces Italy won a lot of ball but failed to convert these into scores.
In the second half the game was more equal, but the Italians missused a lot of opportunities. It was Impossible to make any comeback. The Welsh who were more constant during the game managed to score throughout.

France 19 – 7 Scotland, half time 7 – 0

The first half was dominated by France. The Scottish put up a good defence, but gave away a penalty try. Despite being stronger in the scrum the French failed to realize a lot of opportunities (7-0).

In the first minutes of the second half France scored a lucky try but followed this in quick succession with a well constructed score. Scotland immediately reduced the difference in score with a try converted directly between the posts. At the end of the game Scotland fought bravely but France resisted the attack (19-7)

Georgia 20 - 18 Italy, half time 10 - 12

Georgia was valiant and never let the game going out. With 3 sin bin (3 minutes in 12 over 15 players) Georgia has scored a penalty kick and a converted try in the last minutes to win the game.

Portugal 12 - 35 Scotland, half time 5 - 13

Scotland dominated in the scrum throughout the match.

Portugal continuously lost possession in the scrum and on contact. This caused great uncertainity in their defense.

The big push came in the last 10 minutes with 2 tries by Scotland from stolen ball.

Scotland played a good wide game. The replacement of No 9* added speed to their game.

2012 U18 – Finales du championnat d’Europe à Madrid

The final rounds of the U18 European Championship are taking place in Madrid and the surrounding area. Group A will open the final round of 12 matches today. Group B will follow tomorrow morning, 7 April and the Elite Group in the afternoon, bringing to a close the 48 matches of the tournament.

Elite Group: The two matches in the morning will see Georgia and Portugal playing their respective third match in one week against a 6 nations team. These games have provided them with a lot of experience. In the afternoon, France play Wales and Ireland play England, both a replay of the 2011 season. England and France will be seeking to reverse the results of last year’s games.

Group A : Belgium against Germany should provide us with a final of a very high standard. Despite a game that seduced us all, Spain have failed to reach the Final of their group on home soil. Romania will do their best to deprive them of the third place. Matches from the bottom half – Russia v Sweden, Czech Republic v Lithuania will complete the Group. The loser of the latter encounter will be relegated to Group B next year.

Group B: The winner of the final will be promoted to Group A in 2013. Switzerland will be hoping to move up 2 places with a third place victory over Ukraine. The battle for 5th place will be yet again a replay of a match that has been played over a few seasons now, Luxembourg v Serbia – very undecided, while the loser between Latvia and Hungary will be relegated to Group C

Czech Republic 15 - 7 Lithuania, half time 12 - 7

In what was a weak game, the Czech Rep won in the first 15 minutes be scoring 2 tries. Lithuania scored their first try of the tournament. Lithuania plays in division B next year though.

Russia 10 - 8 Sweden, half time 5 - 3

It was a case of the team making the least amount of handling errors winning. After heavy snow just before the game the pitch proved challenging to play on. However both teams tried to play with dynamic continuity and width. Fortunately for Russia they made less unforced errors and Sweden can consider themselves unlucky when their conversion hit the post. Despite the conditions it was an entertaining match that went to the wire.

Spain 14 - 10 Romania, half time 3 - 10

Spain has won his game face to an important crowd (more than 1500). Romania has played well and with Spain on top, the quality of the game was excellent.

In front of a very large crowd (1500 supporters), all gathered for an Iberian cause, Spain won third place after a match of the highest quality.
With the assistance of a very strong wind, Romania were leading 10-3 at half time. Spain managed to come back into the game when at the beginning of the second half a fault by Romania on their try line led to a Spanish try. From then on Spain were in charge and went ahead on a penalty. During Romania spent 10 minutes on the try line without scoring. The last minutes of the game were dominated by Spain who were the stronger team.

Final :

Germany 12 - 32 Belgium, half time 0 - 14

Germany, who dominated the first ten minutes of the game, eventually gave in to the might of the Belgians who were assisted by a good kicking game. Despite many handling errors on both sides, it was the Belgians who concluded the first half with two tries
In the second half the game the rhythm of the game increased. Germany came back to 5-14 but were challenged in the scrummaging. The Belgians took every advantage that their superiority gave and broke all lines of defense. Germany scored the final try.
