I;m about to change my car battery . I realise disconnection will stop the radio and code will be needed to restart. I don't know the code and circumstances don't allow me to contact the previous owner . There is, in the handbook a seven digit handwritten number, could this be the code ? Shot in the dark I know, btw its a Toyato Avensis that is nearly a teenager !

Thanks in anticipation.

Possibly.

You can get the code though from any number of garages.

You could also connect a couple of wires to a different battery, so as not to cut the supply to the radio. Of course, circumstances may not allow it, but it's a possibility.

If you do this, make sure you use another car battery of similar capacity.

Yes, of course.

It might seem obvious, but believe me, to some people it isn't.

7 digits sounds like a lot,.....usually the sound system has it's own handbook and the code will be printed next to a bar code.
It's worth a try though as you'll get a few attempts before it locks up. If the stereo has buttons marked 1-7 for saving different radio stations then that is almost certainly the code.

n.b. The code system can be confusing. On some models the code numbers are related to the sequential buttons on the stereo dash. So if your stereo has 7 No. buttons then the numbers on the code relate to each individual button.

So if the code is 1,2,3,4,5,6,7.......you press the first button once, the second button twice etc.
If the code is 9,5,8 etc.....then you press the button marked 1 nine times, the button marked 2 you press 5 times, the button marked 3 eight times etc.
