London Irish Future Stars Initiative
Over the last 10 years London Irish has been renowned for producing some of the best young rugby talent this country has had to offer.
Nick Kennedy, Delon Armitage, David Paice and Topsy Ojo have all come through the London Irish Academy system and gone on to play for England. Most recently, Academy graduates Alex Corbisiero, Jamie Gibson and Jonathan Joseph have gone through the London Irish production line and on to play for England.
In order to ensure talented players are given an opportunity at the elite end of the game, London Irish has offered four month trial contracts to seven players. Two Irishmen, Ian Cross and Foster Horan, join from St Helens Rugby League and Leinster Rugby respectively. Both are comfortable playing in the centre or in the back three. Foster, 20, was part of the Irish squad that took part in the recent U20 JWC in South Africa.
Stuart Commins and Mike Ward also join on trial along with Shaun Malton and Michael Worrincy.
Stuart Commins joins from Northampton Saints where he made 17 appearances, scoring two tries. The 23-year-old was part of the 2008 and 2009 Western Province Under-21 squads and co-captained the University of Cape Town first team in the South African Varsity Cup competition. Mike can play at fly half or at full back.
London Irish Director of Rugby, Brian Smith said: “We have pinpointed these six players as guys we believe deserve an opportunity to train with an Aviva Premiership Club. They have all stepped up to the challenge and I have so far been impressed with what I have seen from them.”
