I went to primary (St John the Baptist) and high school (Aspull) with Paul (Durper) and played in some of the same rugby teams, he was always destined to achieve the things he did in Rugby and worked hard to get there. I remember playing in the school team with Paul and we only got beaten once in five years, on one occasion, we beat another team 103 – 0, I scored the first and last try and I think Paul scored all the other tries in between :- ) I remember fishing with him as boys and going to Wigan baths with all our mates… Paul was the first of our year to go off the ten metre diving board, and, he’d only just had his arm taken out of plaster!!!!! Typically brave. RIP old friend. Heavens gain is our loss.

You are so right. If you watch it very, very closely, Warburton doesn’t even tackle Clerc - Clerc just jumps at him with his feet up. Clerc is lucky not to get sent off himself - if it had been football, Wales would’ve had a free kick, if not a penalty. The frogs are just cheaters, Wales play perfect rugby - this world cup has proved these facts. They are facts, as Benitez would say. I applaud your analysis.

I very much agree with this comment. I would further suggest that the argument for proportionality based on the sanction versus the fallout from that sanction is weak one. The fact that game was ruined as a spectacle has little to do with dangerous nature of the tackle as interpreted by Alain Rolland. When the possibility of serious injury exists in the context of the action of a player, the gratification of the fans must not be considered (nor should the intention of the player or his track record).
The veracity of this article is further brought into question by insinuating that Vincent Clerc had anything to do with the red card being awarded. Furthermore, highlighting the fact that Clerc did not suffer an injury as a result of the tackle demonstrates that the author is missing the point in question. It’s all about the inherent potential that exists.
As a hugely committed and emotional rugby fan I have no trouble in stating that everything that can be done should be done to eliminate dangerous play from our sport without deference to the circumstances in which it occurs.

This game was the 2nd most important game in a 4 year campaign. If the rule had been policed throughout the entire tournament, then Rolland wouldn't be facing this public scrutiny. As it stands, Wales have been denied their rightful opportunity to compete for rugby's holy grail. The French couldn't breach a 14 man defence and took the typical Gallic pussy approach and kicked for their points. They didn't even have the cojones to kick for territory and try to score a try. I agree that the Welsh let themselves down with bad kicking but sending off Warburton was a disgrace. The tackle was legitimate in my eyes. It was a bigger man going low to tackle and then holding his feet. The Frog just milked it to make it look bad. No Warburton affected the Welsh scrum and the line out structured plays. Backs can make up numbers in a scrum or line out but they don't do the lifting like other forwards do. Having Jamie Roberts as a flanker denied Wales numbers in the backs, as well as his sheer strength and ability to break open defences. Unfortunately, the game will be remembered as the one that Rolland fucked up with his panicked decision, not the one where Wales fought their way into a IRB World Cup final through good rugby. The sooner that this dickhead Rolland is removed from the international scene, the better.

The article is quite brilliant except perhaps for one point, the question of bias.
Statistics show that there is a case to answer.
During RWC2011 Rolland was the only referree to issue no cards before the Wales v France game. Indeed he only awarded 13 penalties for disciplinary issues. Now comes the more damning statistics:

In 2011 alone Rolland has referreed 4 games for Wales and issued 4 cards (3 Yellow, 1 red)against Welsh players.

In Feb 2011, Wales v England - 1 Yellow Card for Craig Mitchell (later he acknowldged it was a mistake)
In Aug 2011, Wales v England - 2 Yellow Cards (Jamie Roberts, Mike Phillips both contested by Gatland and the players concerned)
In Oct 2011, Wales v France - 1 Red card (the Warburton fiasco)

I would hope the WRU would present such damning statistics the next time IRB even suggests he refs another Welsh game. Needless to say these statistics make Rolland a good candidate for the Guniness Book of Records (number of cards issued by a ref against an international rugby side in one season)
